Healthy Vision
Your eyes are the lens to the world, don’t take it for granted! It’s up to you to keep your vision healthy, read on to learn what you can do and how to maintain healthy vision. At Hollywood Eye Institute we encourage you to make your ocular health a priority. In this blog post, we’re going to give you some of our favorite advice for maintaining healthy eyes.
Annual eye exams
Most patients often ask how often one should make a visit to the eye doctor. Dr. Shareen Greenbaum recommends seeing your eye doctor once a year for an annual eye exam which includes a dilated eye exam. Having a regular eye exam is crucial, especially for individuals over the age of 40. Age-related conditions such as macular degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma can be detected through annual eye exams. Having yearly eye exams help prevent conditions that impair your vision and it also helps detect other health problems like diabetes and high blood pressure. Most eye diseases can be detected through a dilated eye exam since many eye conditions do not come with any warning signs. It is highly recommended to have an annual eye exam to ensure healthy vision.
Implement a healthy lifestyle
Your lifestyle determines your health, so make sure that you’re implementing healthy lifestyle choices. Not only does a healthy lifestyle make you feel great, look better, increase your life span and positively affects your vision. A healthy lifestyle requires one to maintain a healthy weight, consume healthy foods and prohibit smoking. Start taking steps toward living a healthy life!
Protect your eyes
Protective eye gear is highly recommended on the job (if necessary) and for anyone who is looking to play sports. More than 2,000 U.S. workers have a job-related eye injury that requires medical treatment and almost every 13 minutes, an ER in the United States treats a sports-related eye injury. Prevent any eye injuries from occurring by protecting your two most precious gifts, your eyes. Talk to your eye care provider about what eye wear is appropriate for sports or on the job.
It is also urged for individuals to wear sunglasses when out in the sun. It’s important to protect your skin with sunscreen and your eyes with sunglasses because ultraviolet (UV) rays can be very damaging to both. The most effective sunglasses are those that block out 99 to 100% of UVA and UVB radiation. If left unprotected, these rays can affect the eyes with cataracts and macular degeneration.
