Botox Basics
Many people seem to have a misconception of the use of Botox. It’s time to put the negative perceptions to the side and learn the facts about the facial injectable; you’ll be surprised by the benefits it offers patients- learn the Botox basics.
What is it?
Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a drug made from a bacteria toxin that causes botulism, if used in large doses. The doses used for cosmetic purposes are nowhere near potent enough to cause botulism. The purified protein can come in many brand names; however, the most popular and well-studied is Botox Cosmetic. The drug blocks the nerve activity in the muscles, at the injection site, which results in a reduction of muscle activity for a temporary period of time. The injection can last from three to six months, training the muscles to relax. Ophthalmologists were the first medical specialists to begin injecting it for both medical and aesthetic purposes in the early 1980’s.
What is it used for?
Botox is a scientific discovery used to treat a number of health problems and aesthetic concerns. When injected, Botox is mixed with a saline solution to dilute the neurotoxin. It is then injected directly into the neuromuscular tissue. Generally, it takes five to seven days for it to take its full effect. Some of conditions treated are temporary removal of facial wrinkles, severe underarm sweating, cervical dystonia (a neurological disorder that causes severe muscle contractions of the neck and shoulder), blepharospasm (uncontrollable blinking), strabismus (misaligned eyes), migraine headaches, neuropathy (nerve disorder), achalasia (esophagus disorder), and an overactive bladder.
What are some side effects?
Just like any other medicine, there are potential side effects to be cautious about. Some common side effects include pain at injection site, flu-like symptoms, headache, upset stomach, temporary drooping eyelids, and a possibility of indigestion.
