Hollywood Eye Institute uses the most advanced glaucoma testing to diagnose glaucoma, to determine how it may be affecting the optic nerve, as well as to diagnose the overall health of the optic nerve.
Glaucoma is a disease in which fluid pressure within the eye rises. The condition damages the optic nerve; the optic nerve sends visual information from the eye to the brain. The nerve transmits every bit of information from the eye to your brain. Damage to the nerve is typically caused by increased pressure, also known as intraocular pressure. This disease damages the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness, that can develop in one or both eyes. However, with early detection (glaucoma testing) and treatment, eye protection against serious vision loss is possible, since glaucoma becomes worse over time. Tonometry
Tonometry is the measure of the inner pressure of the eye using a special device. Normally, drops are used to numb the eye before the eye doctor or technician takes the measurement.
Ophthalmoscopy
An in-depth examination of the inside of the eye, and specifically, the optic nerve. The eye doctor uses a slit lamp (an instrument with a small light on the end) to magnify the eye, which aids in seeing the shape and color of the optic nerve. This is usually performed after the lights in the exam room have been dimmed.
Perimetry
Perimetry allows the doctor to draw a ‘map’ of your vision by asking you to look straight ahead and indicate when you can identify a moving light passing your peripheral (side) vision. This is commonly known as a visual field test.
Gonioscopy
A pain-free test for the presence of either open-angle or closed-angle glaucoma determined by checking whether the angle where the iris meets the cornea is open or closed.
