What is Pink Eye?
Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is an inflammation of the clear layer that covers the white part of your eye and the inner surface of your eyelids. Conjunctivitis is fairly common and usually does not result in long-term damage to the eye; however, pink eye is very contagious and can spread very easily. A common way to get the contagious form include direct contact with the secretions of an individual who has been infected- most commonly through hand-to-eye contact. It’s important to wash your hands thoroughly throughout the day in order to prevent the infection to your eye. Common symptoms include redness, irritation, itchy eyelids, and discharge coming from the eye.
Pink eye may be caused by the same viruses that cause colds, ear infections, sore throats or allergies. It can also be caused by the same bacteria that causes Chlamydia and Gonorrhea (sexually transmitted diseases). It may resolve on its own, but most types need some kind of treatment. It can last from five to seven days with medical treatment and seven to ten days if left untreated. Anti-bacterial drops are usually prescribed to treat the infection.
