Glaucoma is one of the many eye diseases that causes damage to the optic nerve if left untreated. Optic nerve damage first leads to a loss of peripheral (side) vision and eventually will affect central vision causing total blindness. It is usually caused by increased pressure in the eye but can occur with normal eye pressure. Studies show that half of Americans who have the disease do not even realize it. This occurs because early on in the disease process there are little or no symptoms and once the vision is lost, there is no replacing it.

Glaucoma is more likely in patients over the age of 40, but can be seen before then. There is a genetic component to it, so having a child or parent with glaucoma increases your risk. The disease is more prevalent in African Americans, Afro-Caribbean and certain Hispanic populations. The risk is also higher for patients who use steroids, either orally, intranasal or inhaled. Everyone is at risk for glaucoma, especially people with a family history. It’s critical to see your eye doctor regularly so that glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated before long-term visual loss occurs.

At Hollywood Eye Institute we pride ourselves on early detection and treatment of all types of glaucoma.
