Here at the Hollywood Eye Institute, we take pride in having the highest quality technology in order to provide the best eye care to our patients. We’re happy to announce that we have a state-of-the-art Visual Evoked Potential machine. We have the ability to truly assess deeper ocular conditions. Our VEP machine analyzes the electrical activity in the vision system. As a result, we are able to determine how your eyes communicate with your brain in a way that no other machine or test can. When light from an image enters your eye, it is converted into electrical energy at the retina and travels through the optic nerve to the visual cortex of the brain which processes vision.

Why is owning a VEP Machine Important?

With our VEP we can assess complex condition pertaining to the ocular nerve. Our Hollywood doctor is able to perform a VEP test when a patient is experiencing sharp changes in their vision that can be due to problems along the pathways of certain nerves. Here are the following symptoms that would warrant a VEP test:

  • Painful or non-painful loss of vision
  • Doubled Vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Flashing lights;
  • Alterations in color vision
  • Weakness of the eyes, arms or legs.

These changes are often too subtle or not easily detected through traditional clinical examination in the doctor’s surgery. In general terms, the test is useful for detecting optic nerve problems. The nerve helps transfer signals to allow us to see, so testing the nerve allows the doctor to see how your visual system responds to light. The test is also useful because it can be used to check vision in children and adults who are unable to read eye charts.

What happens during a VEP Test?

First, our Hollywood technician will prepare your skin to be cleaned, dried, and free of any lotions or oils so the sensory pads can be properly placed on your head.

After placing the sensory pads, the technician initiates the test. They will proceed ask that you cover one eye at a time to record each eye’s individual response. Once the test begins, the patient will see a series of black and white patterns that appear to “flip” quickly over and over again on a computer screen. It is simply a matter of looking at the pattern for the duration of the test. The computer will capture the information and produce a report for the doctor’s interpretation of the results.
