Treatment Options

After having the glaucoma testing and if you are diagnosed with glaucoma, there are several treatment options available. To give you a better idea of what treatment options may include, we’ve listed them below.

eye drop treatmentMedications
Often times glaucoma can be controlled with medication. This may be in the form of eye drops or pills. These medications work by lowering the intraocular pressure. There are multiple classes of medications and our eye doctor will discuss the best option for you during your examination.

laser treatmentLaser
Lasers produce a focused beam of light that can make a very small opening in your eye tissue in order to allow the fluid inside the eye to drain. This then lowers eye pressure. Laser surgeries are performed by our board certified eye surgeon in an outpatient setting and during this procedure the eye is numbed so that there is little or no pain.

In some cases, medications and laser are not effective in lowering intraocular pressure and surgery is required. This microsurgery involves our board certified eye surgeon creating a drainage hole with the use of a small instrument. This new opening allows the intraocular fluid to bypass the clogged drainage canals and flow out of the new, artificial drainage canal.
