In our previous post, we covered the intricacies of aging, which is a process that each and every one of us experiences throughout our lifetimes. While the progression of aging has been refined due to innovations in medicine, one inevitable result of aging is facial volume loss. Facial volume loss is the loss of definition of various areas in our face. In this post, we are going to provide an overview of facial volume loss and the procedures we use to control it.

What is facial volume loss?

As you grow older, you begin to experience a loss of collagen and facial fat. Collagen is a vital substance that is produced by your body and enables your skin to look young, elastic, and moist. As the skin begins to age, it loses much of its youthful elasticity, which results in the emergence of wrinkles. Facial fat tends to spread farther apart resulting in fat pads to appear in separate areas of the face. Ultimately, what results is a significant loss of definition throughout various areas of the face. In addition to the loss of collagen and facial fat, a significant loss of facial bone occurs with aging. Without its structural support, there are noticeable changes in appearance.

Facial Volume Loss

Signs of facial volume loss include flattened cheeks, loose skin around the jawline, sunken temples, hallowing around the eye sockets, fine lines around the nose, and nasolabial folds around the nose and mouth.

In addition to aging, there are other factors that cause facial volume loss. Certain medications may hasten the condition, as well as emotional stress, lifestyle factors, and numerous traumas. Also, extreme dieting that results in frequent weight gain and weight loss can cause a stretching of the ligaments that support the soft tissues of the face.

How can you treat facial volume loss?

Preventing facial volume loss means treatinf areas of your face that have been affected using facial fillers. Traditional fillers are soft liquids or gels, which can be injected into the area to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, plump lips, fill out cheek hollows, and repair other facial imperfections. They work by filling the depleted space below the wrinkles, replacing lost fat. They can be injected into the dermis or subcutaneous layer of the skin, depending on the filler and treatment goal.

Treatments are fairly quick and painless. They can vary from ten to thirty minutes. All procedures are done in the office and no anesthesia is used during the process. Pain is typically at a minimum and we take every effort to make you as comfortable as possible during the procedure. As soon as the procedure is completed, you are free to drive home and resume your daily activities.
